Mark Whitecage
Long considered
a musicians musician, Mark
Whitecage has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists over the past
five decades including Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Jeanne Lee and Dave
Douglas, in a career spanning four decades. His music reflects an approach to jazz
composition and improvisation popular in the vibrant New York loft scene of the late
1960s and early
1970s,
in which relatively simple written frameworks allow for extended improvisation.
Mark has explored bop and post-bop, free-wheeling improvisation,
electronics, musical opera, music for dance, solo to big band ensembles, even sound
collages with homemade instruments. Whatever the style or setting, Mark Whitecage
performs at the highest level of creativity, constantly transforming and reconfiguring his
wealth of musical experience to offer a fresh and unique voice in any musical setting.
Born in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1937, he began
performing at age 6 in his father¹s family band, got his union card at age 12, and has
been performing and recording around the world ever since with some of the leading artists
of our time in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
His artistry has led to performances at such European
festivals as Seixal Jazz 2000, 4° Ciclo de Jazz da Guarda, International Festival de Jazz
de Rive de Gier, Banlieues Bleues, Berlin, Moers, Donaueschingen and Maur/Jazz Meets Art,
as well as the Texaco and Bell Atlantic New York Jazz, Kool, Greenwich Village, and Vision
Festivals in New York. Other venues where he has performed include Lincoln Center,
Carnegie Recital Hall, Museum of Modern Art, and South Street Seaport; universities
including Yale, Columbia, and Wesleyan; clubs such as the Blue Note, Knitting Factory, and
Visiones in New York, and a variety of clubs and radio stations in Europe.
Mark Whitecage can be heard on over 35 recordings, a
number of them award-winning, and 1997 saw his ascent to the Top 30 Musicians in the
Cadence magazine Readers/Writers Poll.
