F. Vattel Cherry is the founder of Vattel Cherry's Bassrespänse, a collective of four improvising double bassist/composers. Their first recorded effort was an interpretation of Strange Fruit for a Billie Holiday tribute CD produced by the Baltimore CityPaper.

Vattel has studied with bassists Linda McKnight, Keter Betts and Fred Hopkins. He has worked with many brilliant musicians including, Charles Gayle, Brother Ah (Robert Northern) , John Tchicai, William Parker, David Murray's Big Band, Cecil Taylor's PTHONGOS and Charli Persip's Superband. On over a dozen CD's as a sideman, Vattel has two CD's as a leader, Is it because I'm Black and For Those Who Heal.

Disciplines

F. Vattel Cherry (bass, percussion)
Jackie Blake (clarinet, soprano sax, flute, percussion)*
Ras Chris (guitar, harmonica, flute, kalimba, percussion)*
   John Dierker (bass clarinet)**
   Nicole Cherry (violin)**

*First Discipline
**Discipline Two

This specially-priced 2-cd set was almost two years in the making.  Disk 1, First Discipline, finds Vattel working with two criminally under appreciated musicians, Ras Chris and Jackie Blake.   As George "Doc" Manning writes in the liners, "The music is realized through extremely intense yet sympathetic free flowing interaction of the spirits involved.  This music also reflects the social, economic and educational attitudes of the musicians.  The concentrated conversations these musicians conduct possess a highly developed inner logic which, using sound; silence, time and (melodic and rhythmic) structure(s) are experienced by all the senses."

Disk 2, Discipline Two, finds Vattel working with his sister, Nicole Cherry (currently with the Marian Anderson String Quartet), for the first time, along with long time compatriot John Dierker.  An extremely well conceived musical counterpoint to Disk 1,  in which the artists patiently explore the infinite sonic palette of a single acoustic instrument in its natural state.

This release comes with our highest recommendation.

Disc One: 4 tracks in 55:23
Disc Two: 4 tracks in 62:20
