Doug Carroll is based in San Francisco.  He extends the cello's sound using acoustic preparations and electronic signal processing.  He uses a MIDI cello interface to play digital samples.  He has toured throughout the world with Off Ramp and Tom Nunn.

Joel Harrison is a New York based international guitarist/composer influenced by jazz and world music.  He has performed with Paul McCandless and Nels Cline.

After studying drums with Andrew Cyril, Dave Mihaly has worked with Bando, Victoria Williams and Eartha Kitt.  He is however known in the San Francisco area for his work with the Kalideophone Big Band.

Tom Nunn has designed, built, and performed with original instruments since 1975.  His instruments typically use commonly available materials, are sculptural in apperance, use contact microphones for amplification, and are designed specifically for elements of improvisation.  Tom has performed extensively in US, Canada, and Europe.

Rent Romus brings a unique sound to creative improvisations.  He is currently based in San Francisco interweaving science fiction and improvisation, Finno-Ugric music traditions, and the music of Albert Ayler.

In 1998 Romus began the Vortex PKD Project first in a series of musical adventures merging visionary science fiction with exploratory new music.  This unique and original concept of vortex music* draws inspiration from a vast array of science fiction authors such as Phillip K. Dick. Within pop culture reference Phil’s work made movies such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Screamers possible.  In fact most sci-fi from the last 50 years must give credit to this dark master of pulp fiction.

The compositions presented reflect the feelings and visuals created by the author translated by Romus and the ensemble into new and creative vortex music.

*vortex music (noun) 1. A musical style founded by Rent Romus. 2. Music that utilizes advanced forms of improvisation, jazz, and gut intuition. 3. Music reflecting the exploratory ethic of science fiction
