Since 1990, Judy Dunaway's compositions and improvisations for balloons have been presented in New York City at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, the SoHo Arts Festival, the Alternative Museum, the Knitting Factory, P.S.122, Hear Theater and SoundLab, in Europe at Podewil in Berlin and Seance Ecoute in Paris, in Canada at the Guelph Jazz Festival, as well as at many other venues throughout North America and Europe.

She has performed as a balloon player in compositions by Roscoe Mitchell and John Zorn, and in improvisational pieces with The Flux Quartet, Illuminati, DJ Singe, Ken Butler, Andrea Parkins, Jane Scarpantoni and numerous others.  CRI/Composers Recordings Inc. released a full CD of Ms. Dunaway's works for balloons entitled "Balloon Music" in 1998. Her discography also includes appearances on John Zorn's "Cobra" from the Knitting Factory Works, and Elliott Sharp's "State of the Union 1" from Zoar.

Awards include a commission from the American Composers Forum's Composers Commissioning Fund, an artist/researcher in residency at Zentrum fuer Kunst und Medientechnologie, a recording residency at Harvestworks/Studio Pass, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer and the Kalliste Foundation.

Pop Music
   Shar
   Judy Dunaway (balloons, vibrator)

Trixia Arnold (drums, percussion)
   Ilja Komarov (bass, egyptian fiddle)

Shar was founded in Luzern, Switzerland in 1999.  Judy Dunaway is well-known and notorious for her compositions and improvisations for balloons.   On this, their debut recording, she is joined by Ilja Komarov, bass player for the legendary Estonian band Ne Zhdali and Trixia Arnold, drummer for Les Halmas and former organizer for the BOA new music series in Luzern.

Somewhere between art-rock-noise-jazz (is there such as thing), this recording is certainly a testimony to the musical development of found objects.  If we hadn't heard this record we would have never believed such music/noise was possible from balloons.  Comes highly recommended for some ear bending listening.
