Für Schlagquartet Four compositions from German composer Thomas Witzmann in which he creates a universe of sonorities rivaling electronic music. As can be discerned from the following notes to the musicians, the music is not immediately accessible, but worth the effort required of ones ears. For those interested in the extended possibilities of rhythm and voices, the disc comes highly recommended. The percussionists vocalize number words creating a tension between the suggested counting and the percussion; Cymbala (1992): exclusively using four Chinese cymbals; Flaschenzug (1990): each performer sits at a table with three bottles which are blown and struck in every possible way; Rommelpott (1991): Using old German/Flemish friction drums with ropes through a paired set, rubbing, striking and bowing the rope; Rattleshake (1994): musicians work with eight 30 to 60 cm long dried bean pods either shaken or used as drum sticks. "The emphasis of my work lies in the reinforcement of the singular event character of a performance. Purposeful integration more improvisation, more theatrical and space and/or architecture-referred elements into musical processes promotes and demands the perception with ear and eye."
