Piano (Standards) Braxton's mysterious foray into the solo piano jazz standard world with interpretations of lesser known tunes by Coltrane, Mingus, Monk, Waldron, Shorter, and many others. Although Braxton appears on three other recordings playing piano, this is his only solo outing to our knowledge. While many have criticized this recording as not being in the mainstream of Braxton's oeuvre (or, possibly it was the instrument that scared folks off), we have a completely different take on this recording and find it exactly centered in Braxton's life long exploration of all things music. For those seeking a broader understanding of both Braxton and the interpretive possibilities of the jazz standard literature, these discs come highly recommended. The programming is extremely well thought out and the interpretations are fascinating.
