Lesli Dalaba began performing in California in the 1970s with Wayne Horvitz and Henry Kaiser. In 1978 she moved to New York where she performed for 10 years as both a soloist and ensemble player, traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe. She was a member of Wayne Horvitz' and Robin Holcomb's New York Composer's Orchestra, Elliott Sharp's Carbon, and the Balkan brass band Zlatne Ustne. Other musicians she collaborated with include Eugene Chadbourne, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, LaMonte Young and George Lewis. Dalaba's current projects include LAND, Radio Chongching - a looping electronic trio, and Fred Frith's quintet Tense Serenity.

Fred Frith, composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist, has situated himself for more than thirty years in the area where rock music and new music meet. Co-founder of the British underground band Henry Cow (1968-78), he moved to New York in the late seventies and came into contact with many of the musicians with whom he's since been associated, including, for example, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, and Bob Ostertag.

Eric Glick Rieman is an improviser, composer, and multi-instrumentalist performer who lives in Berkeley, California. Trained as a classical pianist and self taught in jazz and rock, he has a wide interest in musical styles, and performs regularly in contemporary classical, improvisational, sound art, avant-Jazz, and ambient music genres. He has played with many other fine musicians including David Slusser, Ikue Mori, Len Paterson, Lee Alexander, Randy Nordschow, Douglas Ewart, Cecil Taylor, and John Ingle. Glick Rieman released "Ten to the Googolplex" featuring the extended, prepared rhodes.

Carla Kihlstedt has explored the range of the violin in many settings, always pushing the edges of what the insturment can do. She studied at the Peabody, San Francisco and Oberlin Conservatories of Music and has performed as a soloist with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, the Concert Soloists of Philadelphia and the Bach Ensemble of Baltimore. Kihlstedt has appeared as a featured soloist on Phillip Glass' New York based series, MATA, and with clarinetist Don Byron. She has been involved in a number of collaborative projects both as composer and/or performer with John Schott, Ben Goldberg and choreographer Jo Kreiter. She is a founding member of Tin Hat Trio, an accordion, violin and guitar trio, and the art-rock band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. She has recently embarked on a solo project using both her violin and voice simultaneously, and has just released a solo album, Two Foot Yard, "a creative compendium of genre-breaking instrumentals and vocal miniatures."on John Zorn's Tzadik label.

Leslie Dalaba (trumpet)
   Fred Frith (guitar)
Eric Glick Rieman (prepared electric piano)
   Carla Kihlstedt (violins)

The first recording by this group of veteran improvisors leaves one wishing they had found each other much sooner.  Their interaction reveals a high level of focus and playfulness and the resulting pieces display both a visceral and analytic intensity.

Comes highly recommended.
