Tony Wilson is unquestionably one of the most original guitar stylists to emerge on the Canadian scene in the last decade. His compositions tap into the whole history of jazz and blues, shifting from Leadbelly's moaning songs to Metheny-like combustion. He is an intuitive, passionate player once described by American writer Art Lange as a guitarist who can alternate between "clean swing lines and chording of a Tal Farlow and the hyperburn and feedback of a Jimi Hendrix." Lyricism is also an expressive element in Tony's playing as achingly beautiful arrangements of Buffy St. Marie songs and various blues material attest.

Lowest Note    Crew's Choice Selection
The Tony Wilson Sextet

Tony Wilson (guitar)

Peggy Lee (cello)

Dylan van der Schyff (drums)

Paul Blaney (bass)

Dave Say (tenor saxophone)

Kevin Elaschuk (trumpet)

François Houle (clarinet, track 4)

Formed in 1990, the Tony Wilson Sextet is one of the most original creative ensembles working today.  Lowest Note is the sextet's first cd and reflects the wide variety of styles that have become Wilson's trademark.   The music flows effortlessly between shadowy memories of Ellington, Monk, Mingus and Ayler...without cliche, in a sound that is frighteningly honest.

Highly recommended introduction to the SPOOL catalogue.

12 tracks in 64:47 minutes.
