Ernesto Diaz-Infante

Sirius Intrigues CD Cover

Rotcod Zzaj, aka Dick Metcalf, is the (irr) reverend, or should we say, raconteur, of experimental spoken word, piano stylings, and other strange and wondrous sounds.  Labeled early on in his career as playing backward jazz, his music has thankfully grown even more backward ever since.

As Splendid Ezine once wrote about Rotcod Zzaj's music "Everyone should have at least one CD from the ever-expanding (like the universe???) Zzaj Productions catalog!"

And we quite agree...except, why stop at one?

Sirius Intrigues

Another absorbing excursion with improvisational composers Ernesto Diaz-Infante (guitars) and Rotcod Zzaj (keyboards).  You will find yourself on a journey to the far reaches of your (collective) mind.  Relaxing, yet quite intense!

"I hear guitars, keyboards, effects...very in your face for the most part, but somebody's got that ol' Frith guitar sound, so I keep listening. Fragments of speaking voices waft by, strangled strings become computer glitches...rising and falling crunchies...Someone singing with the radio turns into soundtracky keyboards with guitar and telephone dialing...wait, did I hear a drum machine? Oh, it's all flying by too fast to write down. I heard Diaz-Infante perform live a year or so back, and this disc has much more mass and ideas-per-minute than the set I witnessed. Not a judgement, just an observation.  Sounds oddly like the world, filtered through ten fingers and electricity." -- jeph jerman, the improvisor

"What would happen if Daniel Johnston stopped writing Beatles songs and decided to become a free improvisation nut?  Well, he'd probably end up making something a lot like the latest opus from frequent collaborators and Splendid regulars Rotcod Zzaj and Ernesto Diaz-Infante.

This time out, we've got an engagingly weird mix of noisy guitar noodling and experimentation, telephone blips and bleeps, voice samples, random noises, drum machine hits and spoken word passages, topped off (as usual) by Zzaj's half goofy, half cheesy, half fundamentally strange keyboard virtuosity. There seems to be a serious space travel theme going on here judging by the track titles: "Dog Star Afternoons," "Black Dwarf Beatnik," "Voyage to Canis Majoris," etc. Then again, music from Zzaj and friends always tends to the alien, so who knows what these folks are thinking!

Everyone should have at least one CD from the ever-expanding (like the universe???) Zzaj Productions catalog, and Sirius Intrigues is as good a place to start as any. As is often the case, the disc gets a bit bogged down in some of its noodlier sections, but the quality of the playing and the honest strangeness of the ideas it contains makes it a fine, likable addition to the Diaz-Infante/Zzaj canon." -- Spendid Ezine
