The Brass City CD Cover

Joe McPhee (reeds, trumpet, pvc pipe, voice) composer, multi-instrumentalist and poet, has been on a musical search through improvisation, conceptual studies and composition, encompassing various aspects of acoustic and electronic music, which has brought wide acclaim and recognition worldwide. His PO Music series inspired by philosopher Dr. Edward de Bono's work with lateral thinking uses positive provocatioon to move from fixed ideas in order to discover new ones. PO is a language indicator to show that the process of provocation is taking place and that things might not be necessarily what they seem. It is his hope that the name Joe McPhee will accomplish the same result.

McPhee's work extending the free jazz idiom was partially responsible for the founding of HAT HUT records, and McPhee has been widely documented as an international voice in new music. His collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Brotzman Octet, and Dominic Duvall, among others, have produced very amazing music. "Joe McPhee stands out as a musician who adeptly combines a highly developed sense of clarity and precision in playing with and adventurous spirit of collaboration."-Stewart Mostofsky

The Brass City
Joe McPhee (pocket cornet, valve trombone, soprano saxophone)

Jeb Bishop (trombone)

Brass duets from two veterans pushing the envelop of jazz.  The music flows from whispers and tea-kettle whistles to  the whole range of brass sonorities, including those obtained by tapping metal with metal or singing through the horn as well as by blowing on or through it.  Appreciative listeners of either musicians or those just interested in the possibilities of brass improvisation will definitely want this cd.

A SONG FOR BEGGARS
This song won't feed the starving,
nor will conferences on hunger,
with a fortune spent on TALKING.
Nor will it house the homeless,
or quench the thirst of millions
who will die for lack of water,
While the Vampires drink THEIR blood.

This song won't stop our fighting
over bullshit and the finite,
nor keep us all from freezing
when the sun burns through the sky.
Nor will it save our asses
from a fate too cruel to mention.
When,
from our greed and madness,
we have sucked the planet dry.

But,
the weak, the Earth inherits;
and the sick and disillusioned,
and the wounded and the shattered,
and the hopeless without vision,
and the lost without direction,
helpless, lonely,
and the sad!
They will kill the clean young soldiers,
douse the spark of bright tomorrows,
end forever dreams of glory,
lay to rest the brutal lies.
They will satiate their hunger on the bodies of the tourists.
They will satisfy their thirsting on the liquor of their lives.
NO MORE LEADERS!
NO MORE IDOLS!
ONLY BEGGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-- Joe McPhee, Chicago 1999 from the liner notes
